Welcome to Horse and Buggy Produce

At Horse and Buggy Produce our goal is to help keep your home supplied with the most delicious, spray-free**, locally grown fruits and vegetables, pasture-raised meats (beef, pork, lamb, and poultry), trout, and dairy products in central Virginia. Our enormous variety includes everything from melt-in-your-mouth green beans and the planet’s most luscious cantaloupes, to several varieties of heirloom tomatoes (including white ones!), seasonal berries, and fresh-from-the-garden corn on the cob. Complementing these delicious items will be other farm products such as fresh eggs, honey, apple butter, apple cider, and cut flowers.

Drawing from over 100 small family farms’ small-plot, personal vegetable gardens and fruit orchards is the key to our bountiful harvest and unbelievable variety. Most of our growers are members of a Mennonite community in the Shenandoah Valley who not only have been farmers for generations, but also employ timeless methods for raising fruits and vegetables without using synthetic pesticides. Their life-style still includes horse-drawn carriages for transportation, a choice that limits the distribution of this extraordinary abundance from their well-tended soils. Once a week, our service will link your table with their harvest.

By treating you and your family to the healthful goodness of Horse and Buggy Produce, you’ll not only be saving yourself precious time by letting us do much of your shopping for you, but also you'll be contributing to the success of sustainable agriculture and small family farms. However, perhaps the best part is, our spray-free produce is fresher, better tasting, more nutritious, and almost always cheaper than certified organic produce from the supermarket (which is rarely local). In fact, lots of our beautiful fruits and veggies are less expensive than "traditionally" grown (i.e., heavily sprayed with synthetic pesticides) produce found at "conventional" grocery stores.

Location, location, location . . .

We make deliveries to three communities in central Virginia: Charlottesville, Crozet, and Lynchburg. Our Lynchburg and Crozet drop-offs occur on Thursday evening and Saturday morning, respectively. In Charlottesville, several pick-up options are available: 250 West, 29 North, Pantops/250 East, and near downtown, at the Frank Ix complex. For your convenience, these locations offer morning, midday, and/or evening collection times.

*Rather than prorate your subscription fees, we issue an "a la carte" credit equal to the dollar value of your missed weeks. You can spend this credit every time you want some wonderful extras from our a la carte table - you get the items you want, and we just deduct their cost from your current credit. For example, a person who misses the first 7 weeks of the season, and wants a couples share, would receive about $154 a la carte credit (i.e., 7 weeks x $22 per week).

** While virtually all of our produce is either treated without any pesticides whatsoever or only with certified organic sprays, most of our fruit, particularly our peaches and apples, must be treated with non-organic sprays. This is due to Virginia's extremely humid and rainy conditions which make it virtually impossible to produce acceptable fruit without the use of these mild fungicides and insecticides. We promise these crops are exposed to the smallest amount of treatment possible -- far lower than large-scale agriculture would consider. Given this reality, we advise that all of our fruits be thoroughly washed before being eaten.
